Fibrocartilaginous Embolism
Fibrocartilaginous embolism (FCE) is one cause of sudden rear limb paralysis and loss of deep pain perception in dogs. It occurs when disc material from the spinal cord breaks off and blocks blood flow, resulting in damage similar to a stroke.
Causes:
Ruptured disc in the spinal cord
Disc material blocks blood vessels
Signs:
Sudden paralysis in rear legs
Loss of conscious proprioception (knuckling)
Lack of reflexes in hind limbs
Diagnosis & Treatment:
-MRI or myelogram to visualize spinal cord and rule out IVDD
NSAIDs or steroids to reduce inflammation
Patience for potential natural recovery aided by rehabilitation
Our Rehabilitation Program:
Passive range of motion to maintain flexibility
Progressive strength exercises
Assistive walking support (slings, carts)
Balance and coordination training
Modalities to reduce pain and stimulate nerve recovery
With time and proper rehab, many dogs regain functional mobility after FCE.
