Lumbosacral Disease
Lumbosacral disease refers to compression of the nerve roots in the lower back where the lumbar and sacral vertebrae connect. This causes back pain, lameness, and neurological dysfunction in the rear limbs of affected dogs.
Causes:
Spinal tumors or cysts
Vertebral displacement
Inflammation/thickening of joint tissues
Signs of Lumbosacral Disease:
Hind limb lameness, weakness, or paralysis
Pain on lifting tail or pressure over the back
Reduced spinal reflexes in hind legs
Fecal or urinary incontinence
Diagnosis and Treatment:
Neurological exam, x-rays, CT, or MRI
Medication, rest, surgery if needed
Rehabilitation for functional recovery
Rehabilitation Goals:
Reduce pain and inflammation
Improve leg strength and balance
Maintain mobility after surgery
Retrain gait and posture
Provide assistive devices as needed
Rehab modalities like laser therapy, exercise, massage, and hydrotherapy can help dogs maximize recovery. We work closely with your veterinarian to develop the optimal treatment plan.
