Intervertebral Disc Disease
Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is a common cause of spinal pain and mobility problems in dogs. It occurs when the discs between the vertebrae in the spinal column rupture or herniate. This puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, causing pain and neurological dysfunction.
Symptoms of IVDD
- Unwillingness to jump up or go up stairs
- Crying out in pain when moving or touched
- Hunched posture
- Weakness or paralysis of limbs
- Loss of bladder/bowel control (severe cases)
Diagnosis and Treatment
IVDD is diagnosed through a physical exam, imaging tests like CT, MRI or myelogram, and assessment of neurologic status. Treatment options include crate rest, pain medication, surgery, and rehabilitation. Over 85% of dogs with IVDD will heal with conservative management if treated early.
The Role of Rehabilitation
Whether your dog undergoes surgery or conservative treatment, rehabilitation is crucial for optimal recovery from IVDD. Our customized rehab programs help dogs:
- Regain mobility, balance, and limb strength
- Improve core muscle stability to support the spine
- Increase flexibility and range of motion
- Progress through controlled activity to prevent re-injury
We use massage, therapeutic exercises, assisted walking, hydrotherapy, electrical stimulation, and other modalities to facilitate the healing process. Our goal is to help your dog return to full function and quality of life after IVDD.
